There wasn’t much time to lose when the Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan, Inc. turned to Ping Identity. CDPHP is a not-for-profit health insurer serving more than 400,000 members in upstate New York. Its physician-directed network includes more than 14,000 doctors and practitioners in 24 counties.
CDPHP needed secure, single sign-on (SSO) for its health information portal, and it needed it for the start of its upcoming benefits enrollment period. When the company realized that plans to build an in-house solution wouldn’t meet the deadline, it began searching for a proven, third-party solution.
CDPHP had strict requirements for potential vendors, including tight deadlines and budgetary constraints. Additionally, they required a solid understanding of their technical requirements and the architectural needs to allow future expansion into enterprise SSO and other use cases (including OAuth for mobile apps). The vendor also had to improve customer satisfaction, help the organization become the destination health care portal for members, and meet security requirements, which in the healthcare field are quite demanding. The solution had to be easy to implement but still sophisticated enough to let the group expand in the future.
The Solution
After reviewing all of its options, CDPHP chose PingFederate. Its mission: provide members secure and seamless access to all aspects of their health plan, including medical, dental, pharmacy, and wellness. Ping Identity worked closely with CDPHP to deliver PingFederate’s single sign-on capabilities to meet the company’s immediate goals. Supporting these goals meant integrating SSO, federated identity management, mobile identity security, API security, and social identity integration.
CDPHP rolled out a new version of My CDPHP Mobile for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry devices. The innovative app gives members secure access to important benefit information like co-pay amounts and deductible balances; lets members view, email, or fax their member ID card; and helps them locate the nearest doctor, hospital, or healthcare facility while on the go.

The Results
With secure SSO, users access the applications they need with a single click. And they're doing so in droves; registered online users increased 6,000% after Ping solutions were in place. The initial implementation took two months and adding SSO connections takes just one day. This enables CDPHP to move forward immediately with its mobile app allowing mobile app downloads to grow 700% in one month. Looking to the future, CDPHP plans to redesign its portal's front end to make it easier for members to register and use.
